Roma

Standard

Image

{Sigh} We just returned from a whirlwind vacation/class to Rome. It involved a lot of 3 things:

1. Walking

2. Pizza

3. Gelato

I think by most standards that’s pretty close to perfect. Although the walking probably didn’t make a dent on the pizza/gelato intake. There was one pizza called “Super Lasagna Pizza” and I swear this wasn’t at some tourist trap. That and pistachio gelato are definitely on the summer “to make list.” Do you have a summer to-do list? You should!

freedom

kind of… I have finally finished my assignments for this semester and I just have to sit through 5 hours of class tomorrow and I can get on my non-academic to do list. Anyone want to make crafts?

uhh

Standard

I can’t even think of a proper title for this post. I’m getting the feeling I suck at blogging, but I really didn’t do this to become some excellent well-followed blogger. So there.

Basically it’s crunch time at school: mid-terms, finals or papers every week from here on out. And yes I have finals and midterms within days of each other. Scheduling isn’t one of the values of social work. So that’s awesome.

ALSO this weekend I’m doing a little craft social event AND a show, selling a little pot…tery. I’m running a table at the craft social showing people how to make felt ipod cases. There will be dessert so this is the least stressful part. The show is another beast. Despite my intimidation by the incredible other sellers, I’m excited to get back at it. The negative is that Josh will be out of town so I’m setting up solo on Friday, with a new set up that involves 6 foot plantation shutters and wooden boards. oh yes and breakable pottery of course. If you’re looking for a good laugh stop by around 3:30 I’ll be sure to be falling down awkwardly. (A million thanks to my lovely assistant Leigh for helping Saturday!) However if you’re in Chicago you should check it out: http://1154lill.com/holidaymarket/

So blame it on the combined stress of those things and I think I have a decent excuse for my lack of blogging or interesting blogging and probably both. The only reason I’m writing this now is because I’m avoiding writing a paper. So there.

obsession

Standard

So one of my classes this semester teaches us to diagnosis mental illness, or at least identify symptoms of various mental illnesses. A personal favorite is OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder. With OCD you’re obsessed about something, say pottery, and you think about it a lot. Your thoughts about the obsession cause anxiety or anxiousness that can only be lessened by performing and action, which is the compulsion. Once you perform the action, let’s say making pottery, the obsessive thoughts subside for a while only to return and recreated the need to do  your compulsion again. This makes it a vicious cycle of thinking and doing that can negatively affect a person’s day to day life.

Here’s the problem: sometimes I can’t sleep because I’ve got some great pottery idea in my head and I can’t go to the studio. Once I do get to go to the studio I usually leave pretty content. Until I start thinking about something else I NEED to make and the cycle continues. Sounds like OCD to me. Shoot.
